Lego History

Lego History: the history of lego from the time of Ole Kirk Christiansen until today.

Lego history started in the 1930`s.

Lego was created by Ole Kirk Christiansen in Billund, Denmark.

He began making wooden toys in 1932.

In 1934, he started his company, called Lego. Lego began producing their now famous bricks in 1940. In 1949, Lego began producing the now famous interlocking bricks. Lego is said to have changed the design of the Kiddiecraft bricks.

Christiansen`s first bricks were made of cellulose acetate.Like those of modern times, these first bricks snapped together.

"The company name Lego was coined by Christiansen from the Danish phrase leg godt, which means "play well". The name could also be interpreted as "I put together" and "I assemble" in Latin, though this would be a somewhat forced application of the general sense "I collect; I gather; I learn"; the word is most used in the derived sense "I read"."

Lego had prided itself on never sacrificing quality for profit. The company has always strove for high quality products.

By 1954 Christiansen's son, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, had beenpromoted to junior managing director of Lego Group. He came to the conclusion that Lego should be a complete system for "creative play."

However there were problems with the Lego bricks at this time. They needed redesign to fit together better and be improved inquality. In 1958, the bricks were reengineered to what they are today.

The new Lego brick was patented on January 28, 1958. The design has been virtually unchanged since then, except however with the addition of new products and sets. The 1958 bricksfit the 21st century bricks we have today.
